Diageo offers to sell Whyte & Mackay brands

27 November, 2013

Diageo has said it will sell several Whyte & Mackay brands, including Jura, to satisfy the Office of Fair Trading.

Earlier this week the OFT announced that it is considering whether to accept remedies to address the competition concerns arising from Diageo’s acquisition of a controlling interest in United Spirits.

Diageo acquired the interest in July this year.

A spokesperson for Diageo said: “The remedy involves the sale of W&M's Invergordon, Jura and Fettercairn distilleries (and all of W&M's central operations). The inventory and assets associated with the malt distilleries that supply USL and primarily international markets (i.e. the Dalmore and Tamnavulin distilleries) will be retained within the USL group/ operations.”

Full details of the remedy will be made available by the OFT and will be subject to formal consultation.

“Diageo will be assisting the OFT with its on-going work. A further announcement will be made in due course and we are not in a position to comment further at this stage,” the spokesperson finished.
