The US spirits industry is “showing signs of recovery” boosted by consumers’ return to super premium products, says the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States (DISCUS).

The Foster’s Group (Foster’s) board of directors has rejected an offer for its Treasury Wine Estates. Foster’s received an “unsolicited expression of interest” from an international private equity firm to acquire the wine assets of Treasury Wine Estates. The proposal involved a cash consideration of between $2.3billion and $2.7billion for 100% of the assets.

Diageo has appointed Sheila Stanziale to the position of president, Diageo-Guinness USA (DGUSA). In her new role, Stanziale will have full responsibility for the growth and development of the company's beer business in the United States including the brands Guinness, Red Stripe, Smithwick's, Harp and Kilkenny as well as the Smirnoff Ice flavored malt beverages (PABs) and the newly launched Smirnoff Premium Malt Mixed drinks. Old Forester has released the 2010 expression of its vintage-dated “Birthday Bourbon”. The drink was released in honour of George Garvin Brown, the founder of Louisville-based Brown-Forman and Old Forester. Graham Beck, the name behind one of South Africa’s best-known wine brands, has died aged 80.

Diageo has signed up rock band Killers frontman Brandon Flowers to help celebrate Guinness’s Arthur’s Day.

US: Heaven Hill Distilleries is to release two new sizes of Evan Williams Honey Reserve Kentucky Liqueur. The product was first launched in Autumn 2009 and it marries extra-aged Evan Williams bourbon with natural honey. Bottled at 70 proof, and previously available in only a 750ml and 50ml size, Evan Williams Honey Reserve will now be available in a 1.75 litre and a 750ml carry-pack bottle.

Beam Global Spirits & Wine is to extend its agreement for the  Republic National Distributing Co. (RNDC) to distribute its products in the state of Indiana. For the past 37 years, National Wine & Spirits has distributed Beam Global spirits products in Indiana, but in March 2010, RNDC agreed to acquire certain Indiana assets of National Wine & Spirits. RNDC is the second largest distributor of spirits and wines in the US.

The results of the English & Welsh Wine of the Year Competition are in.

Coors launches cold cans

UK: Coors has launched a cold-activated can for its Coors Light brand.

Chile: Vinos de Chile has assessed earthquake damage and reported limited damage, though this amounts to a loss US$250 million.

The Miguel Torres Chile winery has been affected by the earthquake that has shaken the country.

Tetley's cask is to be brewed by Marston's in Wolverhampton. The decision to take the beer out of Yorkshire has been met with disappointment from the real ale trade body CAMRA.

The winery said it was important to show support for its 'fellow countrymen' and has postponed the opening of the Don Maximiano Icon Winery. It also said it was too soon to give an accurate assessment of the damage to homes and wineries in the south.

US: Importer and distributor Winebow has appointed a new president. Jon Moramarco will take up the post on March 30. Moramarco will report to Leonardo LoCascio, chairman and CEO of Winebow.

Earthquake in Chile
