Mouton Cadet to be America’s Cup’s official wine

01 March, 2017

Baron Philippe de Rothschild, owner of Bordeaux wine brand Mouton Cadet, unveiled its special  cuvée for the 35th America’s Cup yacht race, which will be held in Bermuda from May.

Five times winner of the America’s Cup and now CEO of The America’s Cup Event Authority (ACEA), Sir Russell Coutts, joined Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s managing director, Hugues Lechanoine, in London yesterday (February 28) to unveil the limited edition Mouton Cadet red, white and rosé wines.

Bespoke packaging for the trio features Coutts’ signature alongside a glass-etched design depicting the forces of nature on land and at sea.

Lechanoine said: “Mouton Cadet and the America’s Cup share a common vision. The winemaker in charge of a vineyard and the people in charge of the competition for the oldest trophy in international sport both require a deep understanding of and respect for nature, and a dedicated team working with them to achieve their goals.”

Hugues Lechanoine said Mouton Cadet’s winemakers work with more than 400 exclusive grape growers on Bordeaux terroir, using sustainable practices to grow healthy vines and together produce quality grapes for the wines. This has much in common, he said, with the America’s Cup teams who also “work with nature, interpret the conditions, plan their course and strive as a team to be the best.”

The Mouton Cadet 35th America’s Cup Special Cuvée wines will be sold in selected stores around the world promoting the America’s Cup, including Harrods, and at Waddesdon Wine from the end of May. The RRP in the UK is £19. The wines will also be served in all official hospitality throughout the 35th America’s Cup which takes place in Bermuda in May and June.

The white cuvée comprises: Sauvignon Blanc (40%), Semillon (54%) and Muscadelle (6%). The rosé is: Merlot (67%), Cabernet Sauvignon (18%) and Cabernet Franc (15% ). The red consists of: Merlot (79%) Cabernet Franc (10%), Cabernet Sauvignon (9%) and Malbec (2%).

Sold in 150 countries, Mouton Cadet is the ‘official wine’ in several exclusive events, including the Cannes International Film Festival, where it has been official supplier since 1992, as well as The Ryder Cup both in Gleneagles (Scotland) in 2014 and recently in Chaska, Minnesota (USA) in September this year.
