Shepherd's Cottage is a new range of wines from South Africa, developed by David van Velden Jr, who took over as fourth-generation winemaker at Overgaauw last year.
According to van Velden, the wines have been designed for those who want a recognisable Overgaauw wine that is ready to drink and competitively priced.
The Shepherd's Cottage range is made from grapes grown on deep, weathered granite soils on south-facing vineyards, cooled by the afternoon sea breezes from False Bay. The range comprises 2007 Shepherd's Cottage Chenin Blanc/Semillon/Chardonnay, Pinotage Rosé 2007, plus 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The wines are currently only produced from Overgaauw's vineyards. The objective is by 2012 to produce around 600,000 bottles of Shepherd's Cottage for the UK market alone.
