25 January, 2012

The US arm of Japanese drinks company Suntory has joined US trade group the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS).

Suntory International is the 13th full member of DISCUS. Others include Bacardi, Beam and Diageo.

DISCUS president and CEO Peter Cressy said: “We are pleased to announce that Suntory International, the US liquor importer within Suntory Group, has joined the Distilled Spirits Council.”

Suntory International executive vice president and CEO for North America Yoshihiko Kunimoto said: “As one of the world’s largest beverage alcohol suppliers, we are proud to join the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States. Our liquor business in the US is still small, however the US represents a very important and growing market for Suntory, and DISCUS is the global leader in advocating responsible public policy for our industry.”

In 2010, Suntory counted more than 25,000 employees in its group and over $22 billion in sales worldwide. The company’s brands include Midori melon liqueur and Suntory whiskies; Yamazaki, Hibiki, and the recently launched Hakushu.
